ProClime & Cadira Bet $10 Mn On India Biochar

India's biochar carbon removal sector is set to receive fresh investment as ProClime and Japan-based Cadira Capital Management have joined hands to develop seven biochar production plants across the country. The partnership aims to mobilise an initial USD 10 million to convert agricultural residue, forest waste and invasive biomass into biochar, generating certified carbon removal credits while creating local employment and supporting land restoration.

Initial Investment Plan

The collaboration will begin with an investment of USD 10 million to establish seven biochar facilities across six Indian states. The plants will process waste biomass into biochar, a stable form of carbon that permanently stores carbon dioxide while offering potential benefits for soil health.

The companies expect the facilities to produce around 35,000 carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits annually. These credits are expected to be certified under internationally recognised standards, including Puro.earth and Isometric.

Focus On Feedstock

The proposed plants will use a mix of invasive plant species, agricultural residue and forest waste as feedstock. By utilising biomass that is often discarded or burned, the project seeks to address waste management challenges while contributing to long-term carbon removal.

Alongside environmental benefits, the initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities in rural areas and support land restoration activities in the regions where the facilities are established.

Roles Under MoU

Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Cadira Capital Management will lead capital mobilisation and investment management for the platform. ProClime will oversee project development, plant operations, feedstock sourcing, community engagement, carbon credit generation and long-term monitoring.

The collaboration was initiated and structured by Raicho Capital, which acted as the advisory partner for the transaction.

Scaling Carbon Removal

The companies view the initiative as the starting point for a broader biochar platform in India. The partnership combines Japanese investment with Indian project execution to expand permanent carbon removal capacity while strengthening the country's emerging carbon credit ecosystem.

The project also reflects growing international interest in India's biomass resources and its potential to support climate-focused investments through scalable carbon removal infrastructure.

As demand for verified carbon removal projects increases globally, the partnership highlights India's growing role in biochar-based climate solutions. If implemented as planned, the initiative could strengthen the country's position in the voluntary carbon market while supporting sustainable waste utilisation and rural economic activity.
