Indian company ProClime and Japan-based sustainable investment manager Cadira Capital Management have partnered to drive global investment into biochar carbon removal in India.
Through this collaboration, the two companies aim to mobilize an initial $10 million that will be used for the construction of seven plants across India that will convert waste biomass into biochar.
As shared in the announcement, the planned biochar facilities are expected to generate approximately 35,000 carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits per year, certified under Puro.earth and Isometric.
To generate the permanent CDR credits, the plants will operate across six different Indian states, where they will use invasive-species biomass, agri-residue and forest waste biomass as feedstock for biochar production.
This effort is expected to create local jobs and contribute to land restoration in India. It will also lay the foundation for a larger platform that is set to be developed in the future.
“As a sustainable investment manager, we look for opportunities to create lasting environmental and social outcomes with high-quality returns for global sustainable investors,” said Kazuta Sakamoto, president and representative director of Cadira Capital Management.
“ProClime’s India Biochar platform does exactly that, and pairing it with Japanese technology makes it a genuine bridge between our two markets,” he added.
ProClime and Cadira sign a strategic MOU
Under the signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), Cadira will lead capital formation and management, while ProClime will act as a development and operating partner, in charge of biochar feedstock, plant operations, community engagement, carbon credit origination and long-term monitoring.
This international collaboration was initiated and structured by Raicho Capital, which serves as an advisor to the partnership.
Pointing out that India has the feedstock, the scale and the tech depth to lead in permanent CDR on a global level, ProClime Founder and CEO Kavin Kumar Kandasamy shared that over the past two years, the company has de-risked the entire value chain, from feedstock security to carbon offtake.
“With Cadira as our capital partner, we can now build it at scale, turning an environmental challenge into durable carbon removal and local economic opportunity,” he stated.
