UHF Nauni, Himachal Pradesh Forest Department, and ProClime Services Establish Biochar Facility to Mitigate Forest Fires

In India, a state-of-the-art Biochar Research and Training Facility was inaugurated at the College of Horticulture and Forestry in Neri, a constituent college of Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry (UHF Nauni). The facility was established through a tripartite memorandum of agreement involving UHF Nauni, the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department, and Chennai-based carbon management firm ProClime Services. The initiative focuses on sustainable biomass management, carbon sequestration research, and practical climate change mitigation within the state’s forest ecosystems.

Pine needles, invasive Lantana camara, bamboo, and various woody residues present severe operational challenges in Himachal Pradesh by acting as volatile fuel sources for recurring seasonal forest fires. Uncontrolled accumulation of this dry biomass heightens fire risks, degrades forest ecosystems, and threatens local biodiversity. Furthermore, rural communities lack scalable economic incentives and technical infrastructure to systematically collect, clear, and process hazardous forest litter from surrounding landscapes.

To address these hazards, the new facility deploys a biochar production unit with a processing capacity of 1.5 tons per day. The infrastructure converts collected forest biomass into high-value biochar intended for agricultural and horticultural applications. Under the agreement framework, the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department facilitates community-based biomass collection, regulatory permits, and forest compliance. UHF Nauni provides land at its Neri campus, oversees statutory approvals, and leads academic research on soil health, carbon sequestration, and climate-resilient farming techniques.

The facility reduces wildfire threats by systematically clearing combustible forest floor debris while generating carbon credits and soil-enhancing biochar. The project creates sustainable rural livelihood opportunities through biomass collection and processing networks across local communities. Academically, the unit provides hands-on skill development, research opportunities, and technical training for students in biochar technology, natural resource management, and practical carbon-offset methodologies tailored for mountainous agricultural landscapes.
